This has been on my mind all summer. Chad is by far my favorite rider and I have no qualms with anyone in the media, I enjoy Pulp more than I'd care to admit. BUT, I feel like if Dungey had a mysterious illness that not only kept him off the podium, but kept him out of the top 10 most races, that the questions wouldn't stop and at the least, we'd be speculating. I had a theory that maybe Steve/JT/Weege knows what's up, but it was told or learned in confidence, so they've kept it under their hat, as they should. And I get that they're all friendly, I get it and I totally agree with that. I say this only because nobody ever talks about it anymore, haven't for most of the summer. It has just been accepted and there has been no follow up at all. The fact that no one is even poking around leads me to believe that some people know. I guess it would just be nice to hear someone say " yeah, I know what's up, and it's legit, and it will come out during the off season", rather than pretended there's nothing to see here. Also, I'll just say that Chad has every right to keep his private health matters to himself, but that doesn't mean that the media should lay down and move on without addressing it, oh I don't know, at least once during the 2nd half of the series?
Just think it's weird and my BS meter has been going off for a while.
I don't understand why Chad doesn't disclose what he has. If its something curable and will get better why not explain that he is dealing XX and looks forward to getting better and up on the box as soon as possible. Why the secrecy? Yes, I believe if this was Dungey the gracious host of this website would be pursuing this story with more vigor.
Some people may say its HIS health and thus its none of our business. Maybe. But when your job revolves around your physical well being and entertaining others with your remarkable ability to put skill and physical endurance together, then I think an explanation is expected.
I cant fault Steve and friends from disclosing what he has but I'm surprised that it hasn't come out what it is from some other source.
It is definitely Chad's right to disclose his mystery illness or not. I agree with that. We also have the right, as fans, to question the illness as does the media. We also have the right, as fans, to be upset/disappointed with the results and Chad's lack of answers. It is sort of like when Kenny Watson says you don't know what he has been through. Yeah, we don't know and until we do know, we will form our own opinion and you may not like the opinion we form.
Regarding the media forming friendships with riders and honoring their wishes to keep some stuff off the record, I agree with their strategy. If they burn bridges, they won't get an interview. If their friendship means that we don't always get the whole story but we consistently get most of the story then I prefer that to getting some big story and then nothing.
I don't think Chad is done with running up front. I think that once he gets healthy and gets happy with his equipment, he will be top 5 again. I am a Honda guy, so it is tough to think but it seems that the bike is off. I hope it happens sooner than later.
I honestly don't know what the deal is with Chad. It's not a body part, he's told me that much which leads me to believe it's something like a virus or whatever. Then again, maybe there's nothing there and he's just making it up. I don't think this is it but if he's not going to be honest (for example I saw AC292's blood work sheet this weekend showing me what normal white/red blood cell count is and what his is) then we're all forced to just speculate and one of the things to speculate about is that there's nothing bothering him.
And as someone said, there is the medical aspect of this where you don't want to do too much digging because everyone has a right to keep medical issues private. For example, what if he was dealing with hemorrhoids? If I was him I wouldn't want that out there. I don't think that's it but you guys know what I mean right?
I've grilled JT on it and we're good friends but he swears he doesn't know. There are definitely things I don't report when I'm out with dinner, at the bar, at a riders house because it's all kept in confidence and that's just what you have to do. If there's something I find out, I ask if I can write that and the person telling me decides whether they want it out there. If I have a mic in my hand and I'm obviously doing an official interview than I can ask anything and it's all on the record.
Just weird how he had no problem coming out and saying he had epstien barr a couple years ago, but now it's a mystery. Nothing wrong? Just hates the bike? Who knows and I guess at this point just hope he has one or two good years in him left.
For the record, that was NOT me who called in on Mondays show accusing of him being "dope sick". F that guy.
