Just a thought I had as I was listening to the Muddy Creek review with Steve and friends. The topic of Chad and his sickness and his poopy results and it is brought up that Chad wouldnt even be riding if it wern't to fill sponser obligations.

So...if Chad doesnt ride he doesnt get paid? Correct? That must be the reason hes riding sick? The tone is very heroic and noble of Chad to be out there when he really shouldnt.

Lets go back to when james tore his acl and the speculation was that James was continuing to ride so he could collect red Bull money. Correct? Thhis turned out to be untrue but James was viewed in a different light. He was viewed as just riding for the money and being selfish when he really should get his knee fixed.

Why is Chad brave and noble and James is money grubbing?

Am I way off base?

I don't think that Chad is racing for the money in general but maybe specifically he is racing while he is too sick to race because of money. Chad laid out a bunch of his own money to run his own team. From what I know about the economics of owning a team, he will break even if he is fully sponsored. From what he seems to indicate, he is not fully sponsored.I am betting that he isn't bleeding but I bet he is losing a little. My speculation would be that the first year, he probably put in 1 - 1.5 million of his own money that he didn't recoup in sponsor money. I am guessing that he is probably breaking even on the team this year but mainly because he isn't drawing a salary or a salary that he could fetch as a title/race win contender. So, I think you are off base.

As for James riding through his ACL injury, I think it was more a matter of deciding to it differently than he ha in the past. In the past, James would stop if he wasn't 100%. He was young and it makes more sense to get healed so that you do ruin your career with a nagging injury. Ricky Carmichael did the same thing with his knee. I think now that James is more so in the twilight of his career, he has a different choice to make. If you only have a season or two left and you sit out 1 of those recovering from surgery, that will hurt your ability to compete and your fan base. Ultimately, fan base is what pays the bills. If the sponsor don't sell product because of their association with you, they will look for someone that will. I think James was riding because it was the best move for his career.

Not my brightest post ever I must agree.

As you say, its more a matter of Chad not losing more money, rather than just taking a little haircut in salary. A fillin rider must have to meet certain requirments from his sponsers to still pay, ie Townley last year. I still think it would be cool if Chad picked up Weston. He could double a crowd control manager. Weston could just snear at people if they got a little too close to Chad.

Still it must be tough for Chad to sign autographs and explain his results to his fans and the media without disclosing his illness. Probably uncomfortable and tiring. But... his illness has made for an even more blunt Chad as referenced to his riding through a muddy garden comment about Muddy Creek. Oh, and also blasting Racerx for the step-up comment.

I'm not so sure that riding for the $ is such a bad idea. I do my job for $ as I'm sure most do. I do get your point though. It's better to get stuff fixed so one can ride at their ability.
